What is Adult Day Care?

Adult Day Care Centers are designed to provide care and companionship for seniors who need assistance or supervision during the day. The program offers relief to family members or caregivers and allows them the freedom to go to work, handle personal business or just relax while knowing their relative is well cared for and safe.

The goals of the programs are to delay or prevent institutionalization by providing alternative care, to enhance self-esteem and to encourage socialization. There are two types of adult day care: adult social day care and adult day health care. Adult social day care provides social activities, meals, recreation and some health-related services.

Why Adult Day Care

Human interaction is paramount and key to healthy living.  When members of the community lack that interaction, whether it is age related, early onset of a chronic disease such as Parkinson’s, cognitive impairment, fewer friends because of death, or decreased mobility, they become isolated. Studies have proven that when people interact with one another, they are healthier.  Social interaction impacts not only a person’s mind, but their body as well.  Lower blood pressure, relief from depression, and improvement in cardiovascular function are sited as benefits of socialization.  The benefits of adult day care extend far beyond the adult day care participant.  Family caregivers also benefit from peace of mind knowing their loved one is happily engaged in a safe and secure setting.

An adult day care can provide the key elements to a healthy lifestyle.

What It Costs

Comparatively, the costs of a adult day care* is considerably less than the skilled care facility, assisted living community, and in home cares.
